What are Affirmations?
To put it quite simply affirmations are truth
statements.
Why do we need Affirmations?
Think of it this way, our thoughts and words are the
building blocks of our world. Each of us has the power within us to call into being
what we believe to be true. So since every
thought you think and every word you speak is creative. The world you see
around you is the one you have created. Do you like what you
see? If your answer is a resounding yes, it is because you are
already making conscience choices for your life. If you do not like
what you see, know that you can change your life by re-programming how you
think. Affirmations are useful tools in this endeavor.
How do Affirmations work?
We use affirmations to correct our thought
patterns. Think for a moment about your internal dialogue. Do
you put yourself down or criticize yourself? Do you compare yourself
to others or put them down? The mind has a tendency to participate
in these negative thought forms that rob us of our energy and block our
ability to re-create our experience. Think about this for a moment.
You create your world through your words and thoughts. If you think
or say "I'm a loser," "I'm broke," or you fill in the
blank, what are you creating? Affirmations allow you to reprogram
your thinking.
How do you create an affirmation?
Choose the information or issue you would like to
reprogram. You can do this by thinking about what in your life you
want to change, what you are dissatisfied with, or any area that causes
you distress. Decide what would make you feel better. For
instance, you may have issues around your body and want to change the
way you "feel" about your body. Keeping in mind that some
of feelings you have about your body maybe deeply rooted issues, there
maybe a lot of thought patterns to release before the new programming is
operational.
Start by deciding how you want to feel about your body,
think grand. If you want to love your body create your affirmations
with that idea in mind. A simple, repeatable one liner will
suffice. Let's simply affirm "I love my body." Set
your intention on saying this in gradually increasing stages, begin with 10
times per day, then 40, then 100 and keep increasing your
repetition. Now here is the important part: each
time you say your affirmation you will probably feel some resistance. Your mind will deny it and
usually with some feedback "how can I love this fat body?" "I'm
too skinny," or
for some other reason. This is where the real work begins, you
must follow up each objection with the affirmation. Try saying "yes, I
may be fat, but I love my body anyway." This will be hard at
first, but fake it till you make it the truth for you.
There is more. Whenever you make a declaration it
seems that everything opposing it shows up to make you stand up on new
truth you are declaring. You may be bombarded with what you do not
want, changing any habit takes time, diligence and discipline.
Here are some other points to keep in mind when writing
your affirmation.
Keep it positive.
"What you think
about, you bring about" so make sure your affirmation is what you want
to be true.
Stay in the present.
Make
NOW statements,
not for the future. Like in prayer if you desire something in the
future it may forever stay in the future, "yet to come" without ever
arriving. Saying "I want to love my body" will keep you
wanting to love it, and not actually doing it. Say "I am,"
"I have," or whatever just keep it in the present tense. Make
it true now!
Make it personal. Make your affirmations for you
only. Resist the urge to try and change someone else, it depletes your
energy, your faith and shows no respect for the autonomy of others.
Follow the K.I.S.S. rule.
Keep it simple, smarty.
Make it short and to the point so that you can repeat it easily and often.
Aim for the highest idea.
Don't aim for what you can
tolerate. You can have exactly what you desire, you just have to
work for it. Speak your word for the highest idea possible.
REMEMBER, YES YOU CAN!
