"My show is called "Let's Relate in
Love" it comes on Sunday nights at 10 p.m. on Cleveland Talk Radio
1490 AM. I've done the show for about four years now and love every minute
of it. So, if I had to sum up what I talk about I'd say self-empowerment
through love. Meaning I talk about spirituality and self-esteem with an
emphasis on love."
How did you get started doing the show?
"Well, originally I wanted to do a show for
singles and talk about dating and relationships. What I found in doing the
show was that just as many married people out there deal with some of the
very same issues that I thought were important to just singles. As it
turned out, relationship issues are really just personal issues, they are
based on how we feel about ourselves. So the show started focusing not so
much on outward expression or the ways that we interact with others, but
to use the axiom "know thy self." By finding our own truths
through inner exploration we get to make conscious choices about who we
desire to be how we express ourselves."
You say you talk about spirituality. Would you
consider it a Christian show?
"I don't consider it Christian based. I talk about
spirituality which is not denominationally exclusive. I refer to the
Christian teachings more than say - Buddhism or Islam but it is more so
out of familiarity than allegiance. I try to incorporate different
teachings and give respect to them all."
What would be the other teachings?
"Well, I like to talk about Mythology. I think
that it is important that we understand what our thoughts are based upon,
the foundational stuff. I talk about being conscious of the power of your
thoughts and words. I talk about fear, sin, and choices. I talk about A
Course in Miracles. I talk about life values and philosophy. You name it
I've probably at least touched upon it."
I'm going to play the devils advocate now: If
you're not a minister what gives you the authority to speak on all this?
"That is one of the ironic things about human
beings on this planet today, everyone thinks they have to get permission
to do or be who they are. I talk about this too. My being alive with the
ability to think, form my own opinions communicate and defend them to
others is all I need. We are all ministers the real question is - what's
your ministry? What is it that you communicate to the world that's what we
need to ask ourselves? I have choose mine, I have a love ministry, and I
gave myself permission."
"Credentials were created for and by the insecure.
People buy into thinking that they are safer or guaranteed something, that’s
laughable! It gives the illusions that education makes people infallible
experts. We have unfortunately displaced a lot of good people this way. It
most recently happened in the nursing profession. Suddenly women who have
been in nursing for 30 years are being displaced because they don't have
the "credentials.""
I want to see how you differ from traditional
religions on a few subjects. So just give me your thoughts on the
following:
Do you believe in sin?
"Believe in it? That is an interesting question. I
guess according to commonly held notions I would have to say yes and no.
Yes we can fall short of what we desire to be or express. No we are not
punished for our sins, we are punished by them."
"Put in proper context sin was originally
a term used in sports that meant to miss the mark. To fall short of the desired
target. Over the years people have adopted very interesting ideas about
that. If you look back historically, the idea of sin does not get the
attention it does today. The notion of sin has been turned into a weapon
that some of our churches use against the outside world. We use the idea
of sin like a sword unfortunately many are unaware that it is a
double-edged sword and as you cut and condemn others with it you
inevitably cut yourself."
So how about right and wrong, do you believe that
there is right and wrong?
"In a sense but it is not arbitrary, the question
we each must answer is: "what is right for you or wrong for you according to
the desires for your life." I don't have the answers for you or anyone
else. It's all written on our hearts, you know when you are doing what is
right for you and wrong for you."
Are heaven and hell real according to what you
believe?
"Yes, but people have the perception that its
a place they go after
they die. Not realizing that you are either in heaven or hell right
now according to the life you live or fail to live."
Explain that.
"Heaven is what you experience when you know
that you and the Father are One. When you and all life is One because God is One,
undivided alpha and omega. Its
that knowingness - that what ever is before me is God and it is for my own
good. So you really can walk through the valley of the shadows of death
and fear no evil because God is not just with you it is you and all else,
so there is nothing to fear but fear itself. Hell is the experience
resulting from believing we are separate from God, and each other which is
impossible. Oh and also belief in death, that's hell too."
So you don't believe in death either?
"I haven't told you that I don't believe in
anything yet, just that I believe differently. I believe our bodies die
who and what we are can never die."
So why not start a church of your own?
"Churches are like crutches, for its people and
the preachers. Fellowship is good but deceptive in nature. It externalizes
the work and worship. People have the illusion that outer activity rather
than inner activity is what is important, like having your name on the
books somewhere is what it is all about. Remember the analogy that if you
clean the inside of the cup the outside will be clean too? Get your heart
and mind right and you'll do what is desirable. We need to stop wearing
religion and membership like a badge of honor and learn what it really
means to live righteously."
You seem to be in conflict with most traditional
religions.
"Yes you can say that, unfortunately I think that
all the masters have said this to us over and over again and we just don't
want to listen."
So are you anti-church?
"No, not at all, but I do believe most churches
serve themselves rather than the members. It establishes a cycle of
dependency, that becomes static rather than dynamic which is how I believe
they were suppose to be."
This time I want to back up. You said a few
minutes ago that God is not just with you it is you, did you mean that man
is God.
"Yes and no, I like to use the analogy like this.
Man is to God like a drop is to the ocean. We are taught that God is in
man rather than that man is in God. We hear the words everywhere present
but then think that we need to give an invitation. God can not not be
everywhere. If we would just stop with the idea that God created the
heavens and earth separate from itself we could heal and whole the world."
How should we see it?
"That God created life from within itself. God
didn't just become flesh and dwell among us, that would make God
localizable, limited and perishable. One came that was not afraid to see
and say that God is not divided. God is life, get it? God is the stuff and
non-stuff."
I am sure some probably see you as sacrilegious
or the antichrist.
"Yes, some do and some don't, and there are many
reasons and people that not just believe that but need to believe that.
One is so they can remain powerless. You see this way of thinking makes
man responsible for his own life, which requires more than just having
your name on the role at some church. It leaves nobody to blame stuff on
like the devil."
So do you believe in the devil?
"Finally there is a definite NO! Let's put it this
way if God has all power how much power does the devil have?"
None but. .
"None but the power we give to it by our belief in
it. Richard Tinney in the book call "God Chaser" said that there
are two types of Christians ones that are running away from the devil and
those running towards God. Can you serve both? Most churches give the
devil equal airtime in their services. They talk about how powerful the
devil is and how it sets out to deceive you. I've even had people call me
and say that it has tricked me into believing it is not real. But once we
understand that God is total and cannot have an opposite. Once we realize
that the created can never compete with the Creator. We laugh in the face
of what we once thought of as adversity because we trust that a God that
loves us unconditionally uses situations, circumstances and people to mold
us and shape us into better people. That's faith."
Don't you think churches teach us that we are
responsible?
"I think they tech us lazy religion. They teach
you must be born again, that amounts to little more than just taking a dip
in the baptismal pool for most churches. They fail in that they have tried
to market or package salvation. We all must experience the virgin birth of
our higher selves. That means going within alone to find love. So often we
fall into the trap of constantly looking out in the world for love and for
God. We find that we are love, if we look within. Love is what God is,
right? People will tell us that that kind of love is not possible for man
but that kind of love is what is required. The divine giving itself as us.
To find that we must realize that each of us is a conduit for God and
God's love. When we bottle neck that flow of love or close it off that's
sin- what results is sickness, aches and pains a feeling of nobodiness. We
lack vision purpose and drive. That is hell."
Sounds like this goes back to how you feel about
yourself.
"Oh absolutely. Marianne Williamson said something
like to see yourself as anything less than wonderful is arrogant. Its like
second guessing God's plan - like saying you know better. When you get to
a place of love and trust in God you can marvel at the infinite wisdom of
being born into that family with those thighs. You get to a place of
acceptance. I will even go so far to say, that if you don't love yourself,
you don't love God because you don't trust that what God made is good."
So what about atheist who don’t believe in a
God?
"I think its funny how we act as if it matters. We
don't add to God's stature or power with our belief. We can learn a lot
from atheist. We learn that man is not inherently evil and that they don't
just do good out of fear of punishment of hell. We learn that we can take
responsibility for our actions and thoughts and succeed. A Course In
Miracles says something like many conspire with God that have no knowledge
of Him. Operating from a place of love is what is important."
So you sound as if you advocate atheism.
"I advocate life. The Buddhist teach that if you
see a Buddha on the road kill him. What does that say about idolatry? It's
telling us as Jesus did, when he said why call me master? All these things
I do you can do also. Jesus' walk, Moses walk, Mohammed's walk, all of the
saints lives are about our lives. They are our lessons. We can get down
from the cross but in a country that glorifies woundedness, martyrdom and
victimhood why should we? It's kind of sick to glorify suffering. But
check this out - capitalism prospers from suffering. It keeps the masses
squabbling over crumbs. Its keeps the pews full. Hospitals and
pharmaceutical companies flourish. The prisons overflow and war is always
in the air. People buy cars and clothes because they externalize their
worth. I know that's a long answer to a short question but atheist fight
against having false gods be they the one in your pockets or the pulpits
or the clouds."
You talk about this kind of stuff on you radio
show?
"Yep, every Sunday and anywhere else I get to
speak."
I saw in you bio that you are a rape survivor.
"I don't know that I mention it like that. I was
raped twice and thinking I had it all together started going out talking
in front of groups about it. When I started meeting rape victims I
realized that they had shared experiences as a result. I decided that I
didn't want a rape to define how I lived my life. It would not define how
I saw myself, how I dressed, how I related to men - nothing! So I decided
to heal. Now while I am an advocate for affirmations I also believe that
once you claim something you get the challenge to prove it. So I went to
therapy and picked apart every little aspect of my life and how I saw
myself as it relates to the world. Today I can say that everything truly
happens for the good. I didn't understand then how you can take something
so horrendous and make it into a positive. I often think that if I had not
had the opportunity to go down that path I may not have made it to where I
am as fast as I did."
So you've forgiven the person who raped you?
"He is I, don't you hear what I am
saying? I am, you are, one with all life. There is nothing to forgive.
There is only one of us here and that is God. God brought me that
lesson. I learned it. I trust that all things are for my highest good."
So if it happened again what would you do?
"I remember meeting this woman one time who
decided that she would witness to me. She started talking about men. She
said that when we as women give ourselves to a man we are giving him all
we have of value to give. I realized that part of my experience was
learning that I am not my body nor am I defined by it. I have a nice one,
I love it, but I am so much greater. Jesus said he who seeks to save his
life shall loose it. If we think that this life is all we are - meaning
this body because that's how most see life, then we are already dead.
Honestly, I don't know what I would do. I can tell you that as I see
life now I'm not afraid of things such as that because no matter what
happens I'm
alright."
Do a quick commercial.
"Well let's see, you can listen to me Sunday
nights at 10 p.m. on Cleveland Talk Radio 1490 AM, I don't have a set time
slot on the cable show but if you visit my website at http://www.the
bishopspeaks.com
you can find out that information.
Where else do you speak?
"Oh that varies from month to month if you go to
the site or call the hotline I update that often."
Do you have books or tapes?
"Oh I am glad you asked. I do have tapes both
audio and video tapes. Those you can purchase on-line or you can call the
hotline to order. My book is should be out by the end of the summer."
This has been interesting Thank you.
"Thank you!"
